Talking the talk vs walking the talk

Published by writinginvogue at 10:43 pm under Public Speaking Edit This

If you look at the material being presented in the self help industry as part of books, seminar lectures ,audiotapes and so on, you will find a very striking thing. A lot of the material is repeated over and over again.

Most of the guys are telling you the same stuff.

What then is the difference between the guy that sells vs the guy that doesnt sell.

Well..the obvious answer or one of the answers is surely the presentation style, how much you already value the speaker etc.

But in my opinion, the single most important factor is this.

Is the person living his truth or he is just spitting out a routine like a stand-up comic.

It is very difficult to speak to a heart if it doesn’t come from your heart.

And it comes from your heart only when you live what you teach each and every day.

I know this from experience..

I listen to tapes and read self help articles all the time.

And any time an article hits me , I know it is genuine and authentic; it is based off of real live experience;the lessons are not copied from somebody else’s seminar but they have the power and congruence of a man that actually lives them.

The speakers I admire most may differ vastly in their presentation styles. In fact some of the presentation styles might not even be that technically correct. Many famous speakers use words like ‘um..you see..you know.. like’ which are supposed to be speech killers. We call them ‘filler words’ in the industry. But they are all living examples of what they teach. They don’t just talk, they walk the talk. And that’s what makes them so charismatic.

So next time I am worried about whether or not the message will connect with my audience, I know the podium is not where this will be decided. The worry should start in day to day life and I spend more time looking at how I am living my life.

Am I being independent enough?

Am I being decisive enough?

Am I living off my own self esteem or off others’ approval?

This kind of introspection is necessary for anyone that puts himself on the public stage. If you are not living by example, no matter what magical metaphors you use, they aren’t going to connect.

This would help take a lot of the pressure away from you when you hit the stage. Because now all the work has already been done and when you reach there you know you are not going to do any more or any less than you do in everyday life.

So, in conclusion, to be successful at the stage, you need more than just perfect techniques. You need also to get your act together in everyday life for a razor sharp speech delivery.
